Should Indian Businesses Block GPTBot? A Decision Guide for AI Crawlers

Which AI crawlers an Indian business should allow or block, by type of business, with robots.txt examples and the legal context in India.

Most Indian businesses that want to be recommended by AI assistants should not block OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and can decide separately about GPTBot, which collects data for model training. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search. Publishers and research firms whose content is their product have stronger reasons to block training crawlers; service businesses, manufacturers and SaaS companies usually gain more from being known to AI systems than they lose.

The two OpenAI crawlers that matter

Crawler What it does If you block it
GPTBot Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models Your content should not be used for future training. ChatGPT search is not affected.
OAI-SearchBot Builds the index for ChatGPT search Your pages will not appear as sources in ChatGPT search answers

OpenAI’s documentation says each setting is independent: a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search while disallowing GPTBot. Other companies make the same split. Anthropic separates ClaudeBot (training) from Claude-SearchBot (search), and Google’s Google-Extended token controls use in Gemini without affecting Google Search.

A decision guide

  1. Is your content the product?News, research, courses, databases that people pay for.
  2. Do you want AI assistants to recommend you? Most service and product businesses do.
  3. Allow search crawlersOAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot.
  4. Decide on training crawlersGPTBot, ClaudeBot, CCBot, Google-Extended.
Type of business Search crawlers Training crawlers Reasoning
Services (agencies, consultants, clinics, law firms) Allow Usually allow Being described accurately by AI systems helps win enquiries
Manufacturers and B2B suppliers Allow Usually allow Buyers research suppliers with AI tools
SaaS and software Allow Allow for docs, consider for gated content Developers and buyers ask assistants about tools
News publishers Allow Often block Articles are the product; licensing is a revenue question
Research and data firms Allow Often block for paid data Protect the data you sell while keeping summaries findable
Education and course sellers Allow Consider blocking paid material Course content is the product

The Indian context

The question of training on published content is being argued in Indian courts. In November 2024 the news agency ANI sued OpenAI in the Delhi High Court, claiming its content had been used without permission. Several publishers’ associations later sought to join the case. Until the law is settled, content owners who want to reserve their rights have one practical tool: blocking training crawlers in robots.txt, which the major AI companies say they respect.

India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 deals with personal data, such as customer details. It is not a general rule about crawlers reading public web pages, so it rarely decides this question for a business website.

robots.txt examples

Allow AI search, block training:

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: CCBot
Disallow: /

User-agent: *
Allow: /

Allow everything except a paid section:

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /members/
Disallow: /reports/full/

User-agent: *
Allow: /

Leave Google-Extended out unless you have a reason to block it. It covers Gemini’s use of your content for grounding answers as well as training, so blocking it can reduce your visibility in Gemini. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt lists every major crawler.

Check that your rules actually apply

robots.txt is only one layer. Since July 2025, Cloudflare blocks known AI crawlers by default for new domains, and many firewalls and security plugins block unfamiliar bots. A site can allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and still block it at the firewall. Test with our free AI crawler access checker, then confirm in your server logs.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking GPTBot remove my content from ChatGPT already?

No. Blocking applies to future crawling. Content already collected is not removed.

Will blocking GPTBot hurt my Google rankings?

No. Google uses Googlebot for Search. GPTBot is OpenAI’s crawler.

Is robots.txt legally binding?

It is a published request that major companies say they follow. It does not physically stop access. For content you must protect, put it behind a login.
