Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of making a page the source a search engine quotes when it shows an answer directly on the results page. That includes featured snippets, “People also ask” boxes, knowledge panels and answers read out by voice assistants. Brilad’s AEO work changes page structure, wording and markup so that the passage Google lifts is yours.
How Google picks an answer
Google does not need any special markup to show a featured snippet. Its documentation says the snippet is chosen automatically from pages that already rank for the query, based on which passage answers it best. Two things follow from that:
- A page has to rank on the first page, usually in the top five, before it has a realistic chance at the snippet. AEO sits on top of SEO.
- Google scores passages, not only whole pages. Since the 2021 passage ranking update, a single well-written section inside a long page can be selected even when the rest of the page covers other topics.
Snippets come in three main formats: a paragraph, a list or a table. The format Google shows for a query tells you the format your answer needs. If the current snippet for “SEO audit checklist” is a numbered list, a paragraph answer will not replace it.
What we change on your pages
Question headings and direct answers
Each important question gets its own H2 or H3, worded the way people search, with the answer in the first sentence or two below it. A common guideline from industry studies of paragraph snippets is 40 to 60 words for that first answer. It is a pattern observed in data, not a Google rule, and we adjust it when the queries in your market show something different.
Format matched to the query
Steps become an ordered list. Comparisons and specifications become an HTML table with a header row. Definitions stay as a short paragraph. We check the live results for each target query before choosing.
Clean markup
Answers built from page-builder layouts, tabs or accordions that load on click are harder to extract. We keep answer text in plain HTML that is present when the page first loads.
Structured data, used honestly
Since August 2023 Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites, and it has stopped showing HowTo rich results. For most businesses, adding FAQ schema no longer produces an expandable result in Google. We still use FAQPage, Article, Organization and similar schema where it describes the page accurately, because it helps search engines and AI systems understand the content. We do not sell schema as a shortcut to rich results that Google no longer shows.
Snippet controls
Sometimes a snippet answers the question so completely that nobody clicks. For those pages you can use the max-snippet or data-nosnippet controls to limit what Google shows. We look at click data before recommending this, because it can also cost you the snippet.
Which pages to start with
We start with queries where you already rank in positions 1 to 10 and a snippet is currently shown to a competitor. Search Console data shows these queries directly. Winning one of them changes what a searcher sees for that query. Starting with pages that rank on page three does not.
AEO compared with SEO and GEO
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank the page | Be the answer shown on the results page | Be cited in AI assistant answers |
| Unit that is judged | Whole page | One passage | One passage, plus the brand as an entity |
| Main measure | Rankings and clicks | Snippets held, visibility in answer boxes | Mentions and citations across assistants |
Frequently asked questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Google takes featured snippets from pages that already rank for the query, so AEO only works on top of a page that ranks.
Will FAQ schema get us an FAQ box in Google?
Almost certainly not, unless you are a well-known government or health website. Google restricted FAQ rich results to those sites in August 2023.
Can we lose traffic by winning a snippet?
It can happen for simple factual questions where the snippet answers everything. For questions that need a longer explanation, holding the snippet usually brings more clicks than ranking below it. We check Search Console data per query.
How do you measure AEO results?
We track a list of target queries and record which ones show your page in the featured snippet or “People also ask” box, alongside clicks and impressions from Search Console.
