Accessibility and SEO overlap heavily because screen readers, search engine crawlers and AI systems all depend on the same things: semantic HTML, a logical heading structure, descriptive link text, text alternatives for images, captions and transcripts for media, and content that does not depend on a mouse or on visuals alone. Fixing these once helps people with disabilities use your site, helps crawlers understand it, and reduces legal risk. This guide lists the fixes that serve both, with how to test them.
The fixes that serve both
| Fix | Accessibility benefit | Search and AI benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Semantic elements: header, nav, main, article, footer | Screen reader users can jump between regions | Crawlers can separate main content from navigation |
| One H1 and a logical H2 and H3 outline | Users navigate by headings | Structure is clear for ranking and passage retrieval |
| Descriptive alt text on meaningful images | Blind users know what the image shows | Images are understood and indexed |
| Link text that describes the target | Links make sense out of context | Anchor text tells search engines about the target page |
| Captions and transcripts for video and audio | Deaf and hard-of-hearing users can follow | Media content becomes readable text |
| Real HTML tables with header cells | Screen readers announce rows and columns | Data is extracted accurately |
| A lang attribute on the html element | Screen readers use the right pronunciation | The language is clear to search engines |
| Real buttons and links, keyboard operable | Keyboard and switch users can navigate | Crawlers follow real links, not script handlers |
| Text as text, not in images | Can be resized, translated and read aloud | Can be indexed and quoted |
Common problems in modern front ends
Divs pretending to be buttons and links
<div onclick="goTo('/pricing')">Pricing</div> <!-- not keyboard accessible, not a crawlable link --> <a href="/pricing/">Pricing</a> <!-- accessible and crawlable -->
Headings chosen for size
Using an H4 because it looks right, or several H1s for styling, breaks the outline for screen reader users and search engines. Style headings with CSS; choose the level by structure.
“Click here” and “Read more” links
A page with ten “Read more” links is meaningless when a screen reader lists links, and tells search engines nothing about the targets. Name the destination: “Read the guide to AI crawlers”.
Content only in hover states or carousels
Information that appears only on hover or in auto-rotating slides is hard to reach for many users and often missing from the HTML crawlers read. Put key information in plain, visible text.
Standards and legal context
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, published by the W3C in October 2023, are the reference standard, with level AA the usual target. In India, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 requires accessibility, government websites follow the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites, and accessibility expectations for private services are growing. Businesses serving the EU should also note the European Accessibility Act, which applies from June 2025 to many digital products and services.
How to test
- Run Lighthouse’s accessibility audit and an automated checker such as axe on key templates. Automated tools catch many common issues, but manual checks are still needed.
- Navigate each template using only the keyboard: Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and Space. Every control should be reachable and visible when focused.
- Turn on a screen reader (NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on Mac and iPhone) and listen to a page: headings, links and images should make sense.
- Check colour contrast for text and buttons.
- View the page source to confirm key content is in the HTML; our AI crawler access checker helps here.
Frequently asked questions
Is accessibility a Google ranking factor?
Google does not list accessibility as a ranking factor. Many accessibility fixes improve things Google does use, such as page structure, link text and image understanding.
Do accessibility overlay widgets help?
Overlay scripts do not fix the underlying HTML and are widely criticised by accessibility experts. Fix the code instead.
Where should a team start?
Headings, alt text, link text, keyboard access and form labels on your most-used templates. These fix the largest problems for both people and crawlers.
