Much of the value of appearing in AI answers shows up as awareness, not clicks: people see your name in an answer, then later search for you, visit directly or mention the assistant when they contact you. You can measure it with five signals tracked together: branded search impressions in Search Console, direct and AI referral traffic, share of voice in repeated AI answer tests, self-reported attribution from enquiries, and periodic brand awareness surveys. No single signal is conclusive; the trend across them is what matters.
Why clicks undercount AI visibility
A 2025 Pew Research Center study found that when a Google search showed an AI summary, people clicked a link inside the summary in about 1% of visits. Most people who see a brand named in an answer do not click at that moment. If awareness builds, it appears later and elsewhere, which is why it needs its own measures.
The five signals
| Signal | Source | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Branded search impressions and clicks | Search Console, queries containing your brand name | People looking you up by name |
| Direct and AI referral visits | Analytics, direct channel and an AI assistants channel group | People arriving without a search, or from an assistant |
| Share of voice in AI answers | Monthly repeated tests of buyer questions | How often assistants name you against competitors |
| Self-reported attribution | “How did you hear about us?” on forms and calls | People who credit an AI assistant or search |
| Brand awareness surveys | A short survey of your target audience, once or twice a year | Recognition among people who have not contacted you |
1. Branded search in Search Console
In the Performance report, filter queries with a regular expression that matches your brand and its common misspellings, for example:
brilad|brillad|bri lad
Track impressions and clicks monthly. Compare with the same month last year to allow for seasonality, and note other activity, such as campaigns or press coverage, that could explain changes.
2. Direct and AI referral traffic
Create an AI assistants channel group in GA4, as described in tracking brand mentions for free. Watch it alongside direct traffic to key pages. Some people who learn about you from an assistant type your address or search your name, so they appear as direct or branded organic visits.
3. Share of voice
Run the same buyer questions every month, several times each, on each assistant, and record the percentage of runs in which you are named. This is the most direct measure of AI visibility, and a leading indicator for the others.
4. Self-reported attribution
- Add an optional, free-text “How did you hear about us?” field to enquiry forms.
- Ask the same question in first calls, and record the answer in your CRM.
- Tag answers such as “ChatGPT”, “Perplexity”, “Google AI” and “saw you mentioned” consistently.
Free text captures answers analytics cannot, such as “my colleague asked ChatGPT and it suggested you”.
5. Surveys
For larger brands, a short survey of the target audience asking which companies they know in your category, and where they heard of them, gives a baseline that is independent of your own channels. Repeat it once or twice a year.
Reading the signals together
| Pattern | Likely meaning |
|---|---|
| Share of voice rising, branded search rising | AI visibility is building awareness |
| Share of voice rising, branded search flat | Mentions may be in low-volume questions, or it is early |
| Branded search rising, share of voice flat | Other activity, such as PR, ads or events, is driving awareness |
| Self-reported AI mentions rising | The clearest sign assistants are sending customers |
Present these in the monthly report described in reporting AI search results to leadership.
Frequently asked questions
Can we attribute branded search growth to AI answers alone?
No. Many activities build awareness. Look for timing that matches changes in share of voice, and use self-reported attribution for direct evidence.
How long before awareness shows in branded search?
Usually months, and for small brands the numbers are small. Track the trend rather than monthly jumps.
Is a survey worth it for a small company?
Usually not at first. Branded search, share of voice and self-reported attribution are enough until the audience is large.
