Brand Mentions and Co-occurrence in AI Search

How brand mentions and co-occurrence shape what AI assistants associate with your company, what is documented, and where useful mentions come from.

Brand mentions are references to your company on other websites, with or without a link. Co-occurrence is your brand name appearing near a topic, such as “Brilad” near “generative engine optimisation”, across many sources. Language models learn associations from text, so a brand that is regularly mentioned in connection with a topic is more likely to be named when that topic comes up. No search engine or AI company publishes how much weight mentions carry, so parts of this guide describe our view of how the systems work, and are marked as such.

What is documented

  • Language models are trained on large collections of web text. Associations between names and topics in that text shape what a model “knows” without searching.
  • AI assistants that search the web retrieve pages that discuss a topic. If those pages name your company, the assistant sees your name in context.
  • In 2024 Reddit signed data licensing agreements with Google and with OpenAI, which shows that discussion platforms are valued as sources of what people say about products and companies.
  • Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines ask raters to look at what independent sources say about a business when judging its reputation.

Our view on unlinked mentions

SEO has long focused on links. A Google patent associated with the 2011 Panda update refers to “implied links”, references to a site without a hyperlink, as a possible signal. Google has not confirmed how, or whether, it uses them today. For AI systems, which read text rather than follow links, we think a clear, accurate mention in the right context matters even without a link. This is our working view and has not been confirmed by any provider.

Where mentions come from

Source Example
Industry press Interviews, commentary, articles written for trade publications
Events Speaker listings, recorded talks, workshop pages
Podcasts and video Guest appearances, with show notes that name the company
Directories and lists Industry directories, association member lists, curated tool lists
Community discussion Answers on forums where staff participate openly and disclose their role
Clients and partners Case studies and partner pages on their sites, with permission

What makes a mention useful

  • It uses your exact company name
  • It connects you to the topic you want to be known for
  • It appears on a site that is itself credible on that topic
  • It describes you accurately, with current details

A mention that uses an old name or describes a service you no longer offer can do harm, because it gives AI systems wrong facts about you. The hallucination guide covers how to trace and fix these.

What to avoid

  • Undisclosed promotional posts on forums, which break most platforms’ rules and damage trust when found
  • Paid articles presented as independent coverage
  • Mass directory submissions to low-quality sites

Frequently asked questions

How do I track brand mentions?

Search engines’ own operators, alert services and media monitoring tools can find new mentions. For AI answers, run a fixed set of prompts about your topic regularly and note whether and how your brand appears.

Are mentions more important than links now?

Both matter. Links still affect traditional rankings, and rankings still affect which pages AI systems retrieve. Mentions add context about what your brand is known for.
