Google (GOOG) to shut down Picasa; shifts focus to Photos

Google (Alphabet, Inc, NASDAQ:GOOG) is possibly shutting down Picasa Photo Editor in the company recent times. The company is looking forward to shift its focus to the Google Photo Service that was launched around about a year ago. Picasa has been Google’s primary photo editor, but now it seems that its time is up. The news comes in from a blog post, wherein Google Photos Chief Anil Sabharwal confirmed the news.Picasa shutting down

According to the blog post by Google Photos Chief Anil Sabharwal, “We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products”.

This possibly means that the new Google Photos might just have all the features that were existent in Picasa. According to Google Photos Chief Anil Sabharwal, Google Photos will also have all the photos that a user had uploaded on the Picasa Online Web Albums.

The users with Picasa might still use it, but there will not be any update to the software. IN addition, the users also will not be able to add pictures to the online album. Before the services are stopped for Picasa, the users are advised to download all the photos that are available on the Picasa Web Service or delete them accordingly.

Sabharwal said, “One thing to make clear is that none of this is happening today – if you have a Picasa Web Album you can keep using it as normal. We’ll start rolling out these changes on May 1, 2016.”

The support for the desktop version of Picasa will be stopped by Google Inc. as on March 15th, 2016. The users who want to use it can still do so, while others can always move on to Google Photos.
